When he was 21, Arlyn Kleinwolterink joined the Air National Guard. He was sent to Vietnam in January 1968 after the USS Pueblo was captured by North Korea. He specialized in engine repair for military planes.

At age 25, Leon Koster was drafted into the Army. After completing basic training and officers training in the United States, he received orders for Vietnam. He served in the 1st Air Cavalry and spent time on a rifle squad along the Ho Chi Minh trail.
